The Katmai Volcano caldera. A massive volcanic eruption took place in 1912 in what is now Katmai National Park. Novarupta, the largest volcanic eruption recorded in North America, 20 times greater than the Mt St Helens eruption, shared a magma “pool” with Mt Katmai.
